Typhoon Champi Forces Taiwan to Close
Most services in Taiwan stopped on October 23rd as Typhoon Champi moved closer to the island. This strong storm is one of the most powerful in the Pacific this year.
The storm's center was about 170 km east of Taiwan, with winds near the eye reaching 191 km/h. Forecasters predicted the typhoon would move northeast of Taiwan before heading north. Sadly, strong winds and rain from the storm have already caused one death and injured 163 people. Over 77,000 homes lost power, though electricity has been restored to most of them.
Many shops and schools were closed, and streets were quiet as people stayed inside. Transportation was also heavily affected, with 262 domestic flights and 717 international flights canceled.
